About Twin Lakes Church

Twin Lakes Church began in 1890 and was known as the “Little Brown Church by the Sea.” Situated next to Seabright Lake (now the Santa Cruz Harbor), this small congregation grew under the pastorate of Roy Kraft.

In the early 1970s, Twin Lakes moved to their present location near Cabrillo College. With modern and spacious facilities, the church grew significantly. Now, Pastor René Schlaepfer presents exciting and relevant messages using the latest tools in multimedia.

With the support of the church body, Twin Lakes underwent a major renovation of the main sanctuary building in 2000.

My wife Laurie and I are the proud (and sometimes exhausted) parents of three kids: Jonathan, Elisabeth, and David. I grew up just over the hill near Los Gatos, but have lived in Switzerland, Portland, Colorado, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe (I know! Gorgeous places all!).

Before becoming a pastor, I worked for several years in the broadcast industry, starting as a young teenager in local television and radio. Eventually armed with a degree in Broadcasting and Journalism, I worked at radio stations and production companies as what they call an “air personality” and “voice-over talent” (everyone else calls them “deejays”) until I was 32.

In my twenties, while working at a Top 40 radio station in Portland, I attended Western Seminary and received an M.A. in Theology. While I insisted my graduate studies were just for personal enrichment, God had other plans. I was soon called to be a youth pastor at a church in San Diego and it was there I fell in love with the ministry. A pastorate at Sierra Community Church in Lake Tahoe followed; while there, I also worked as a morning drive air personality at a Contemporary Christian Radio network.

Then in 1993, I was asked to become pastor at Twin Lakes Church. God has blessed, the church has grown, the family has grown, and I have even grown (a little). I sure love it here.

One little-known fact: Born to Swiss parents, I have dual citizenship in both the US and Switzerland.

I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, and it has also been a huge blessing to grow up at Twin Lakes Church! Outside of my immediate family, I can think of no greater influence God has used to shape me than TLC. At the age of 16, my “career” at TLC began as a part-time maintenance worker and custodian. I’ve been given many opportunities here, including serving in our Kruz Kidz, Junior High, Senior High and College ministries. During these years I also spent two great summers on staff at Hume Lake Christian Camps.

After graduating from Cal Poly in 1987, I served as Director of Camp Hammer for the next nine years. I’ve been serving as the TLC pastoral staff since 1996, and I'm currently wrapping up my MA in Theology at Fuller Seminary.

I was blessed beyond measure when I married my beautiful and wonderful bride Lora in 1996. God has blessed us with three children: Jack, Luke, and Anna. For fun I enjoy being with my family and doing home improvement projects, surfing, and splitting firewood with my father and brother.

Late in my teenage years, after a period of time trying to discover my own life purpose, God used a youth pastor to impact my understanding of who Jesus Christ was. This pastor helped point me in a new direction and showed me how to live an abundant life since that was the reason Jesus came. (John 10:10)

In the following years I had a desire to do for others what he had done for me.

I graduated from Westmont College with a BA in Literature and received my Masters of Divinity in Theology at North Park Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. I was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church and was pastor to students for 18 years at Oakland Covenant Church. Following this, I was Senior Pastor of Crown Valley Church in Laguna Niguel, California for 8 years.

I have been married to my wife Pam for over 30 years. We have shared the adventure of raising 4 daughters, Robin, Carrie, Wendy and Kristy.

I came to TLC 6 years ago to continue the passion God has given me of working with people. I oversee the Adult Ministry Team at TLC, and work with adults in the areas of discipleship, including Wednesday Night education, Retrouvaille (a ministry to hurting marriages), 12 Step Recovery, men's net ministry, and counseling.
